Until now, the fastest...

Until now, the fastest Octavia has only used the 2.0-litre turbo petrol unit from the Golf GTI. But following the success of the torquey diesel Fabia vRS, Skoda is keen to get a potent oil-burner into its larger model, too.

The vRS TDI will feature a 2.0-litre diesel with an output of 168bhp. Buyers can expect a 0-60mph time of around eight seconds and a combined economy figure in excess of 45mpg. While details of the new model are posted on Skoda"s global website, bosses in Britain are yet to announce the diesel addition to the vRS line-up, although the TDI variant is likely to hit the UK in late summer.

As Skoda"s own pictures show, the diesel model will keep the sharp look of the petrol vRS. More importantly, it will also retain its practicality. The good news for family car buyers is that both hatch and estate versions will be offered. Buyers can expect to pay around ÷£18,500 for the oil-burner.

Meanwhile, Belfast taxi firm Value Cabs has ordered 100 Skoda Superbs, after its drivers raved about the car. "It"s fitting the firm ordered 100 in our centenary year," said a Skoda spokesman.
