This is the Protectavest, and it"s designed to secure children in car and minibus seatbelts. Creator Hugh Thomson hopes the garment, which is worn like a body warmer, will cut accident injuries among youngsters. Hugh, from Wishaw, N Lanarks, said: "Kids often wriggle in the car, but the vest straps ensure the belt is always in the optimum position."

Road Tests

Thrills, spills and...

Thrills, spills and spinning wheels – that’s what you can expect from this year’s adrenaline-filled MPH Show. Throughout November, Earls Court in London and the NEC in Birmingham will be turned into high-octane arenas full of stunning supercars and spectacular stunts.

Now in its fifth year, the event will once again be hosted by TV star Jeremy Clarkson, along with a couple of his well known colleagues.

For 2007, the show’s organisers are promising that the excitement will hit even greater heights than before. And you don’t get much higher than a towering 40-foot steel mountain. The imposing structure will be the stage for a nailbiting race between man and machine.

The test of nerves will see a Land Rover Discovery tackling an extreme 45-degree slope, while a skilled rock climber will scale a vertical cliff face on the other side. It will be no mean feat, with off-roader and driver remaining inches from potential disaster.

This incredible challenge will be one of a number in which cars are pitched against humans – inspired by the London-based 2012 Olympic Games. All these amazing automotive displays will be performed by some of the best racing drivers and stunt performers in the business.

Fans of supercars won’t be disappointed, either. As in previous years, the Live Arena will play host to the world’s automotive exotica. The most impressive of these will be the incredible 252mph Bugatti Veyron. Joining it in the line-up – worth a staggering ?27,652,332 in total – is the Pagani Zonda, Koenigsegg CCX and Ferrari Enzo.

However, the amazing Aston Martin DBS will shade even these glamorous models. Famous for being James Bond’s company car, the ?160,000 coupé will be making its UK debut. Also being aired on British soil for the first time are the new Jaguar XF and wild BMW M3.

The cars don’t disappear once they’ve tyre-smoked their way out of the arena, either. All these models, along with many other high-performance vehicles, will be on display in the MPH Gallery. Unusually for a motor show, there are no barriers or security guards between visitors and the desirable metal.

Instead, you’ll be granted maximum access to the world’s most attractive four-wheeled creations. Whether it’s a Lamborghini or a Lotus, you’ll be able to get under the bonnet and behind the wheel.

Experience

If this whets your appetite for more, the Driving Experience section will appeal. Here you can buy some of the best motoring experiences around, such as getting to grips with a Ferrari or squeezing into a single-seat racer. The drivers and instructors who make these days happen will be there, too.

In the Motoring Pavilion and Styling and Tuning Zone, all sorts of kit, from hi-tech sat-nav and stereos to stylish alloys and eye-catching bodykits, will be there to attract your attention.

Meanwhile, the Classic Car Zone’s display of legendary vehicles includes the 1958 Ferrari 250 Testarossa. Only a handful of these Le Mans-winning racers were built, and each is valued at ?4million. Here’s your chance to see the legendary Jaguar XJ220S, too. This big cat hit 220mph, and was another to achieve success at the French 24-hour race.

Doors open at Earls Court on 1 November for four days, before the action moves on to Birmingham’s NEC. We’ve listed the details of where to go and what to see(right), so all you need to do is get ready for one of the highest-octane dates on the motoring calendar.
