Motor industry boffins...

Motor industry boffins have decided that colour-coded filler caps and clearer labelling on forecourt pumps may be the only way of preventing drivers accidentally filling up a diesel car with petrol. Engineers have been working for a year to find an answer to the problem. Electronic solutions are considered too expensive to retro-fit to cars and pumps.

A worrying 12 per cent...

A worrying 12 per cent of cars and vans have at least one defective tyre. In a Tyre Industry Council report, 14 per cent of those tested had less than 2mm of tread, too. A spokesman for the body said: "In our opinion, these weren"t safe and needed replacing immediately." A total of 30,000 tyres were examined for the study.

This valuable silver cup has been awarded through the years ever since 1906, and is traditionally given to either a company or an individual who has demonstrated outstanding technical motoring achievement.

Originally awarded to the Auto-mobile Club by Sir Thomas Robert Dewar MP, other winners include Dunlop back in 1973, for developing a failsafe tyre and wheel system, and Jaguar for the XJ Series" aluminium body structure.
