And judging by the amount of complaints I have heard over the years from the lorry boys and girls – about everything from low profit margins to unfair competition created by foreign-registered vehicles – I always thought they were genuinely hard-up.

The Swansea-based official register keeper has now given a bizarre explanation for its cash-grabbing scheme, saying a local number would let residents in South Wales ring at lower costs than the rest of the country. But it claims it chose not to use an 0845 lo-call number, which costs only 4p a minute to everybody, because this would be too expensive to run.

They"ve covered up everything except the grille and lights - and those are the very bits which spill the beans on the next Coup탩. Auto Express"s exclusive picture shows it will take its front-end design cues from the new luxury Quattroporte saloon.

The pressure is on the development team after the firm"s design boss, Frank Stephenson, admitted he"d pulled the plug on the first 18 months worth of work, claiming the car didn"t have the right look. Both the Coup탩 and Spyder will be bigger than the old vehicles.

As well as the front being based on the Quattroporte, the new cars also draw on models from the company"s illustrious history, including the A6 Pininfarina. However, according to Stephenson, neither will look overly retro. Both models are expected to make their debuts next year. New Quattroporte driven
