These are the first official pictures of the front-wheel-drive Cadillac BLS, which will debut at the Geneva Motor Show. The BLS - which officially stands for "B-Series Luxury Sedan" - is the American maker"s answer to the BMW 3-Series and Audi A4, and will appear in showrooms here in right-hand drive.
GM product chief Bob Lutz told Auto Express: "This is a car we will only sell in Europe. It will be built here, and although the vehicle is a concept for Geneva, it"s exactly the same as the production model that will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September." To boost its appeal, the BLS will be the first Cadillac to come with the option of diesel power. The engine will be based on the 1.9-litre CDTI unit found in the Vauxhall Astra and Vectra, but modified to deliver 165bhp.
Other choices will include both naturally aspirated and turbo-charged 2.0-litre petrols, along with a new 2.8 V6 - which will also power the Vectra and Signum. The BLS will arrive in the UK in spring 2006, and is tipped to undercut competitors from BMW and Audi by at least í‚á£1,000. Meanwhile, Cadillac"s Mercedes E-Class rival, the CTS, is set to make its RHD debut here in April.
