This exciting new British sports car proves that being green doesn’t have to be dull. Called the Climax, the ultra-lightweight two-seater is inspired by the Formula One racing cars of the Fifties and Sixties, and features a mid-mounted, flat-four-cylinder turbocharged engine that runs on E85 bioethanol.

The news came at the Detroit Motor Show from Nick Reilly, former boss at Vauxhall and now president and chief executive of GM Daewoo in South Korea. That"s where the Antara is being built, ahead of its autumn launch in the UK.

"The hybrid engine will go into the Antara," Reilly told Auto Express. "It"s two or three years away, and it will be the first application of the unit, because no other manufacturer is currently offering a mass-market hybrid SUV."

He added that the drivetrain will also appear in the Chevrolet Captiva, which arrives in the UK this summer. In both cars, the hybrid system will use a 2.4-litre 170bhp petrol unit. Other hybrids are coming, too. "There will be four or five applications across the Vauxhall and Chevy brands," Reilly said.
