The new car, which originates...

The new car, which originates from Australia, is a heavily reworked version of Vauxhall sister company Hol÷den"s HSV Clubsport R8. With a V8 engine feeding the 414bhp power output to the rear wheels, the VXR8 is tipped to be one of the most thrilling models ever to wear the Griffin badge.

An official top speed has yet to be recorded, but Vauxhall says it won"t be less than 170mph

Unlike its Monaro coupe predecessor, however, the VXR8 is available only with a four-door body, making it a more practical choice.

As it"s missing the traditional Vaux÷hall V-grille, only a subtle bonnet badge gives away the latest model"s identity from the front. A low airdam V8-badged air scoops behind the front wheels and a boot spoiler beef up the VXR8"s styling. The new model comes as standard with 19-inch alloy wheels but, for the ultimate in street cred, 20-inch rims will be available as an optional extra. At the rear, there are four chrome-tipped exhaust pipes and distinctive LED tail-lights.

Powered by the same 6.0-litre V8 as the outgoing Monaro VXR, the fresh car has a 0-60mph time of 4.9 seconds. An official top speed has yet to be recorded, but Vauxhall says it won"t be less than 170mph. While a six-speed manual gearbox is fitted as standard, customers will have the option of an automatic, too. It adds half-a-second to the 0-60mph time, but a self-shifter is likely to suit the V8 better.

Electronic stability and traction control come as standard, although both driver aids can be disabled for track day use. Inside, the VXR8 is largely similar to the HSV Clubsport R8, shar÷ing its leather upholstery, metallic trim and deep bucket seats. These provide the four-door with a classy yet sporty feel, although Vauxhall badging will distinguish the UK-spec model.

When it goes on sale in this country in July, the standard VXR8 will cost ÷£34,995. However, if you don"t think the 414bhp machine provides enough power, you"re in for a treat. Vaux÷hall is promising to bring out a 540bhp supercharged version later this year - with a price of less than ÷£40,000.
