Motor industry boffins have decided that colour-coded filler caps and clearer labelling on forecourt pumps may be the only way of preventing drivers accidentally filling up a diesel car with petrol. Engineers have been working for a year to find an answer to the problem. Electronic solutions are considered too expensive to retro-fit to cars and pumps.

Unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the drop-top "entry-level" model gets an electric folding roof just as impressive as its performance. At the push of a button on the dash, the slatted carbon fibre engine cover opens and out comes the fabric top. It"s quick too, raising or dropping in only 20 seconds.

The machine emits an infra-red beam which is reflected back to the device by everything except human skin - so any dark blobs which don"t reflect the beam are assumed by the camera to be people. A computer chip then analyses the image to work out how many blobs were "seen".

"It can easily tell the difference between cardboard cut-outs, plastic dummies and real people," said inventor Dr Leon Lobo of Laser Optical Engineering, Loughborough, Leicestershire. With careful positioning, the í‚á£90,000 camera can see rear seat passengers, too. It is currently being trialled on the UK"s first HOV lane in Leeds.
