Local authorities are getting even more powers to fine motorists. Anyone seen in a cycle lane or blocking a pedestrian or cycle crossing could face a penalty of up to í‚á£100. Cameras and traffic wardens will be used to catch offenders. The Government hopes the pro-bike move will encourage more drivers out of their cars and on to two wheels.

The AA argued its employees only do long hours in "exceptional circumstances". Road Services Director Steve Dewey said: "They could get held up in traffic while recovering a member."
