The filling stations are going under the brand name Shell Express - but not all customers are in favour. Critics say there is nobody to talk to face-to-face if things go wrong, and it"s thought the large underground storage tanks could be targeted by thieves, who"d sell the fuel on the black market.

A Shell spokeswoman told Auto Express there were currently no plans to introduce unmanned sites in Britain.
