Drivers should change their tyres well before they reach the minimum legal tread depth, experts are warning. A British Rubber Manufacturers" Association study showed stopping distances in the wet increase by up to 30 per cent even when there"s 3.5mm tread left, compared with a new tyre. The legal limit is 1.6mm.

The figures reveal that a switch by 20 percent of motorists in the capital would save the equivalent weight of 4 Big Ben towers in pollution. To push the message home, Honda has launched a "No Choke" campaign to highlight the need for greener cars in London - cars like its own Civic Hybrid, launched earlier this year.
The campaign will feature "pit crews" on the boundary of the congestion charge zone, offering drivers an information pack on greener motoring.
The pack includes a "Map of Greener London", which displays environmentally friendly locations and places of interest across the city, such as recycling centres and parks, as well as the eco benefits of switching to a low-emissions car.
Honda"s Environment manager John Kingston said: "Most people would like to be more "green", but they don"t necessarily know how. Some aren"t even aware that there are cleaner alternatives out there."
