The exposed surface...

The exposed surface is simply a plastic cover, designed to make the product look more expensive than it really is. And if you damage it, a replacement costs only í‚á£16.

A Vauxhall spokesman said: "This new design of steel wheel is ideal for people who want the stylish look of an alloy, but are worried about kerbing them." Unlike traditional plastic wheel trims, it"s virtually impossible to tell what this one is made of. The reshaped steel wheel underneath has five spokes, which remain completely hidden behind the cover.

What"s more, it"s bolted directly to the hub, rather than clipped on, making it harder to steal and less likely to fly off. The invention, known as the Structure Wheel, is 16 inches in diameter and weighs only slightly more than an alloy of similar dimensions.

The innovation is fitted as standard to the new entry-level Vauxhall Vectra Exclusiv, and could soon be available across the rest of the range.
