The compact MPV - based on the Roomster concept seen at last year"s Frankfurt Motor Show - will mark the maker"s first entry into this expanding sector. It will use the platform of VW"s latest Golf, but the front and rear overhangs are kept to a minimum to ensure that it is nearly as short as a supermini.

As the mag"s picture shows, the design is an evolution of the concept, with its distinctive D-pillar and aircraft cockpit-style glass area. A full-length glass roof will give the interior an even roomier feel.

Inside, the Skoda gets five individual seats. The rear chairs slide forward and back, and can be removed to increase load space. The three seats will also be mounted higher than those in the front, giving back passengers a clear view out.

Engine choices will include a new 100bhp 1.5-litre three-cylinder diesel, which will be offered alongside the 75bhp 1.4 oil-burner. The petrol line-up will incorporate a 110bhp 1.6-litre FSI and a choice of 75bhp and 100bhp 1.4s. A sporty vRS is also on the cards, and could use a 140bhp 2.0-litre TDI diesel, mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. Prices for the MPV have yet to be discussed, but insiders suggest the model will cost from around н‚бЈ10,000. It"s expected to debut at the Geneva Motor Show in 2006.

Meanwhile, Skoda"s plans for a sub-Fabia car are based on VW"s Fox, due in the UK next year. And the baby will further emphasise the company"s no-nonsense budget values when it arrives here in 2006. Available as a three-door hatch only, it will come with 55bhp or 65bhp 1.2-litre petrol units, or a 75bhp 1.4 diesel, all with three cylinders.

The styling is similar to the Fox, but designers will give the city car a more individual look by adding Skoda"s vertically slatted grille and chrome trim. Prices are likely to start at less than н‚бЈ6,000.
