The curved grooves in the solid tread blocks also play a key role in reducing uneven wear. Aimed solely at the replacement market, the S.Drive also boasts a narrow width, which makes fitting bigger wheel and tyre sizes easier, reducing the risk of fouling wheelarches.

The German firm has announced a bespoke personalisation scheme for its entire range of cars. Called Exclusive, this offers “virtually infinite customisation possibilities”. “It opens up the palette, with more than 30,000 ready-prepared colours,” explained a spokesman. “But there’s also the option of one-off mixes as long as a suitable sample is supplied.”
The theme can continue inside, too, from the carpet and mats to the seatbelts and headlining. Examples already created include a shocking pink TT coupé, painted to match some back seat cushions!
But before you take your favourite curtains into the dealership as an example, be warned. The more unusual the colour, the harder you may be hit in the wallet at trade-in time. Jason King is forecasting editor for vehicle values book Glass’s Guide, and he said: “Moving away from the basic choice can be detrimental to the price you’ll get for the car.”
Meanwhile, Audi has unveiled four new colour-coordinated Exclusive TTs with two-tone nappa leather interior trim. The shades are silver, crimson red, signal orange and saddle brown, and add matching stitching and piping round the gearlever gaiter, handbrake and steering wheel. They cost ?1,750 extra on the 2.0-litre and ?1,200 on the 3.2.
