The Finn, 38, led from start to finish in the rain-soaked Welsh forests to end the season one point behind Sebastien Loeb. The Frenchman had already secured a third straight WRC crown despite missing the final four rounds after being hurt in a training accident.
In Loeb’s absence, Gronholm and co-driver Timo Rautiainen cruised to their seventh triumph of the campaign. They beat Peugeot privateer Manfred Stohl by more than 90 seconds, with Petter Solberg finishing third for Subaru – which has now completed its first winless season since 1993.
“It’s a perfect end to a great year,” said Gronholm. “In terms of victories, this is my best season, and I’m delighted for the team.”
Ford rally boss Malcolm Wilson – whose 19-year-old son Matthew was top British finisher in 12th – added: “To end 2006 with eight wins in total is a real achievement.”
Kris Meeke and Guy Wilks led the Junior WRC class, but suffered setbacks, handing the prized title to Swedish youngster Patrik Sandell.
