More than a quarter of young motorists drink and drive, a new survey has revealed. Of 1,000 students aged 15-25 questioned for the study, six per cent also admitted getting behind the wheel without a licence - some didn"t have one as they were under 17.

Jargon such as this – it stands for Anti-lock Braking System – along with ESP and even bhp baffles many car buyers, according to classifieds website Motors.co.uk. Nearly half of the 2,500 drivers it polled were unsure of the term ESP (Electronic Stability Program), while a quarter didn’t know bhp stood for brake horsepower. The results show that compiling a car advert isn’t simply a case of cramming in as many abbreviations as possible, and highlight the need to spell out information.

Engineers are currently working on two machines, one of which will be a new version of the flagship LS. However, first to hit the road will be the GS350 GT, which was unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show. Expected in August 2005 and aimed at the Mercedes E55 AMG, it will mark Lexus" first anniversary of sales in Japan, and sport a 300bhp 3.5-litre V6 mated to a 170bhp electric motor. Offering an astounding 470bhp, the car will feature all-wheel drive and be capable of around 60mpg.

The Alpine set-up is ÷£250, and has a new feature called Full Speed, which allows real time control of the Apple device. To select your music, press the source button until the display reads "iPod", then scroll through the menu by using the volume control to choose the track you want.

Installation costs about ÷£50, but you can save money by wiring up the system yourself. Apart from making the standard ICE connections, all you need to do is run a cable to somewhere - such as the glovebox - where the iPod can be safely stored while driving.
