Jenson Button’s hopes of F1 success have been boosted with the launch of a multi-million-pound wind tunnel at his Honda team’s HQ in Brackley, Northants. Opened last week by Trade and Industry Secretary Alistair Darling, the facility (image) can recreate track speeds of up to 180mph. It will help technicians in their quest for straight-line pace.

The 197bhp Type R won...

The 197bhp Type R won the title of Best Sporting Car in Auto Express"s New Car Honours in 2003, and with more than 35,000 finding homes worldwide, the model has proved a big hit.

The last Type R to leave the plant was a Nighthawk Black car. With its powerful 2.0-litre engine and six-speed manual gearbox, the three-door hatch completes the 0-62mph sprint in a mere 6.8 seconds. Honda"s initial predictions estimated UK sales would peak at 1,500 models each year, but 18,033 examples have found homes since its introduction in 2001.

The new five-door Civic arrives in January, priced from í‚á£12,685. But fans of the Type R will be disappointed - as there is no direct replacement planned. However, bosses are evaluating a hot three-door model.
