Safety at roadworks...

Safety at roadworks could be improved thanks to a clever new invention. Student Paul Scrase of Brunel University, London, came up with the idea of clipping illuminated arrows or chevrons to the top of road cones. The creation won the Reliance Security Group"s prize for design, an annual safety product competition, and scooped Paul a í‚á£2,000 prize. David Campbell, from the Road Maintenance Association, said: "Any invention designed to keep traffic on the correct side of roadworks sounds good. Sat-nav units are among...

Sat-nav units are among the most popular items taken from cars. Andy Foster, Crime and Disorder Reduction Officer at South Yorkshire Police, said: "More than í‚á£300,000 worth has been stolen here in the past two years." Many owners hide their system in the boot when leaving their car.

But Foster added: "The dash cradle or suction cup marks on the screen show the vehicle may contain a system, and that"s enough for the thief to break in."

Now, UK forces are printing warning leaflets to be distributed through shops which sell the kit. Sat-nav makers are also looking into PIN codes and built-in tracking systems.
