It"s got the class-leading Renault Clio and new Vauxhall Corsa in its sights - as well as the sales success of its predecessor. But let"s be clear. Meeting expectations in 2007 will require something very special. After all, the original Fabia accounts for half of all Skodas on the UK"s roads, and a total of 1.5 million have found homes around the world.

After 23 cars self-combusted, the French manufacturer was forced to recall and fix 28,000 vehicles built before May 2003. The fires, which all happened in Sweden, Norway and Denmark, only related to 1.6 or 2.0-litre petrol versions. All the cars went up in flames while the engine was turned off.

Each year a host of thrill-seeking motorists descend upon the Baja desert to take part in a 1,000 mile sprint from Southern California to Mexico, and they do it in all kinds of rugged off-road extreme machines.

Spurred on by the success of the square-jawed 300C executive saloon, Chrysler unveiled an angular new Grand Voyager at this week"s Detroit Motor Show.

It"s less curvy than before, but the lines of the seven-seat people carrier are clearly an evolution of the previous model, and there"s plenty to get excited about inside. The firm"s versatile Stow "n Go fold-flat seating option returns, but Chrysler is offering a second arrangement called Swivel "n Go.

This lets owners rotate the second pair of seats through 180 degrees to face backwards. The innovative set-up also includes an occasional table, integrated child booster seat and a powered, flat-folding rear bench.

Other practical features include a tailgate and sliding rear doors which can be opened electrically, plus movable LED interior lights and a camera to help with reversing manoeuvres.

The Grand Voyager was unveiled at the US show with a trio of V6 petrol engines, but when it hits UK showrooms next year, the 2.8-litre diesel fitted to the all-new Jeep Wrangler is expected to be available. Meanwhile, some glamour was provided on the Chrysler stand by the Nassau concept (pictured left). But don"t be fooled - despite its coupé-like appearance from the front, the car is actually a Shooting Brake-style hatchback!

The clever design does without conventional B-pillars, and there are two glass panels in the roof to ensure a light and airy cabin. The luxury four-seater also boasts short overhangs front and rear, plus 21-inch alloy wheels.

And although it"s comparable in size to the American manufacturer"s enormous 300C, the styling of the show model is expected to translate to the look of a future family offering.
