One to watch – that’s the latest entry-level sat-nav from Dutch manufacturer TomTom. Bosses claim they have introduced a host of upgrades to the third edition of the Tom­Tom One, and also made it easier to use.

Among the new features is Map Share, which allows you to update your own maps onscreen and share your findings with other users. The latest routes come ready loaded on your device, but free downloads from the TomTom website ensure your unit is always up to date. If you’re stuck in traffic, the Find Alter­native function soon calculates another route. Also, users have access to safety and roadside assistance data wherever they go. The extensive Help Me menu includes routes to the nearest hospital, and provides basic car maintenance tips and even first-aid. There are alerts for fixed speed cameras, too.

All this comes on top of the 3.5-inch full-colour touchscreen and super-clear mapping – which makes the ?149 starting price look great value. But you can add extras such as traffic updates via an RDS-TMC antenna, plus safety camera warnings, special navi­gation voices and enhanced points of interest.
