ABD Road safety spokesman...

ABD Road safety spokesman Mark McArthur-Christie explained: "Whilst this law will give just retribution for those killed by such drivers, it will not make the roads safer. Most who drive in a careless manner simply do not believe they are going to kill somebody so will not adjust their habits. The real and serious problem of drivers not taking care will therefore remain unaddressed. The ABD have for many years called for the police and the judicial system to crack down on careless drivers before they kill using the perfectly adequate existing laws. Sadly, prosecutions for careless driving are not taken seriously by the court system and the police are therefore reluctant to take careless drivers to court. Prosecutions therefore remain extremely rare."

Not content with the...

Not content with the hatchback and Golf Plus variants, VW is now revealing this new Estate. The wraps come off the load-lugger at last week"s Geneva Show, and it will hit UK dealers in the summer. It features subtle changes up front, with an R32-style chrome grille and deep air intakes, providing the practical VW with a smart new look.

However, the major changes are at the rear, where an extended roofline and large tailgate set the Estate apart from conventional five-door hatchback models. Striking light clusters, a low-lip rear bumper and satin-finished roof rails complete the changes. Engine options at launch include the 138bhp 1.4-litre TSI turbocharged and supercharged unit, plus conventional petrol motors. More choices will be available after sales start in August.

Six airbags, alloy wheels and semi-automatic climate control are fitted as standard. Prices have yet to be announced, but the entry-level 1.6-litre petrol model should cost around ÷£15,000.
