New small-segment arrivals...
New small-segment arrivals such as the Fiat Grande Punto and Vauxhall Corsa have helped earn their manufacturers a place in the list of the latest top 10 best sellers in Europe, fresh figures show.
Sales on the Continent generally remain buoyant, with a year-on-year rise of one per cent (12,349 cars) in January. The total for the month was 1,289,170 units, according to analyst JATO Dynamics. And it"s the superminis leading the charge. "The new Corsa has been particularly well received, accounting for an eight per cent improvement in market share," said a JATO spokesman. VW was Europe"s best seller overall, while it is the firms with significant new model introductions that have made the biggest leaps up the sales charts. As our table indicates, Peugeot, Fiat and Toyota have all performed well, enjoying booming business with the 207, Panda and Aygo respectively.
The latest EU registration data shows the Japanese brand boosted its market share by a healthy 22 per cent, thanks to sales of the Aygo and new Yaris. Vauxhall made second place after shifting more than 39,000 new Corsas. Meanwhile, Fiat"s slice grew by nearly five per cent.
Interestingly, even though the revamped hatch range bumped up the number of MINIs sold by almost 23 per cent, it wasn"t enough to give the company a top 10 ranking.
