New powers which enable local councils to cut the congestion and disruption caused by roadworks have been introduced. The rules mean contractors could be banned from digging up roads during the rush hour. “There’s nothing more annoying than seeing work take place at the most inconvenient times,” said transport minister Rosie Winterton.

THE latest generation of sat-navs will let drivers update their own digital maps on-screen. Maker TomTom is set to launch new units which allow blocked routes to be marked and street names inserted with immediate effect. It’s also distributing software so users can share changes with other TomTom users via their PC. The devices will cost ÷£299, plus a subscription.

YOUNG motorists aren’t prepared for driving on rural roads, and are putting their lives in danger. So says a survey by Autoglass and charity Roadsafe. It shows under-25s are most likely to take risks on country routes. One-third admitted taking bends at speed, 20 per cent have driven too fast and two-thirds have broken the speed limit.

TYRE giant Goodyear has launched a new fundraising scheme for the RNLI. For every set of HydraGrip rubber bought, the company will donate ÷£2 to the lifeboat charity’s training programme.
