More than 30,000 cabriolets have been bought so far this year, and it"s still not summer. But what makes the figures even more bizarre is that, according to weather experts at the Met Office, there"s an average of 30 per cent more rain and 20 per cent less sunshine this year than in the first three months of 2003.
Peugeot is king of cabrios, taking top spot with the 206 CC and fourth place with the bigger 307 CC. BMW"s 3-Series Convertible and the homegrown MG TF sit between them, with the Mazda MX-5 in fifth position. The Audi A4 and BMW Z4 are also selling well, as is the Ford Streetka.
A spokesman for the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) told us: "There"s now a convertible to suit every pocket and the new breed is rigid and quiet. That tempts buyers who demand top performance as well as stunning looks."
