The Frenchman won last weekend’s Rally Portugal, but with arch-rival Marcus Gronholm finishing second, the Citroen star was still two points adrift of the series lead. However, the Finn and his fellow Focus WRC runners were given a five-minute time penalty for infringing the regulations, when an official post-rally technical check discovered that the leading Fords were running illegal rear side windows. The decision dropped Gronholm from second to fourth position and, as a consequence, allowed Loeb to move into the lead of the championship by one point.

Mazda’s ultimate sports hatchback, the Mazda3 MPS, goes in sale in the UK next February, priced from ÷£18,995. The car promises scintillating performance from its 260ps 2.3-litre engine. Claimed 0-60 is 6.1 seconds.

Mazda UK will have a limited allocation of approximately 1,000 right-hand drive Mazda3 MPS vehicles during 2007 and anticipates a healthy waiting list for the newcomer.
