The firm"s network of stop-overs is introducing the "Cuddillow" - the UK"s first cuddling cushion, created following a customer survey. Researchers found 57 per cent of its guests felt lonely sleeping without their partners, and more than a quarter had to hug a pillow to help nod off. As a result, the firm developed the metre-long two-armed bedding. The pillows are being trialled at hotels in Durham, Newcastle, Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham, and will go nationwide if successful.

The signals are programmed to work in certain ways at different times of the day, but bosses think the personal touch will make peak-hour traffic flow more smoothly. Staff watching 37 video screens will over-ride the PCs and switch lights to green whenever queues start to build.
