Called Around View Monitor (AVM), the technology uses four cameras equipped with wide-angle lenses mounted around the car; one in the grille, one on each of the door mirrors and one on top of the back door. The clever "bird"s-eye" set-up enables drivers to navigate the tightest parking bays by merely watching the dashboard-mounted screen as they reverse. The process eliminates the need to swivel your head when manoeuvring.

She features on a new design for pedestrian crossings, which is on a three-month trial in the German town of Zwickau. There is also a red-light version, with arms spread wide to stop people crossing. Designers from local firm Signal Technology Rossberg claim the figure is a safer alternative to the classic male design, because more people notice her. They also reckon her curvy shape allows more light to shine through.

The city council says...

The city council says recording every incident which results in a fixed penalty will dramatically reduce the 20,000 disputed tickets a year. A spokeswoman for the authority said: "The cameras will provide a photographic record of every car issued a ticket to give evidence in a dispute."
