And if you look at the sheer size of the GM empire, do you really see it having any loyalty to Vauxhall"s Luton and Ellesmere Port plants? Or the brand, come to that? And could the same rules apply one day in the future to blue oval-owned Jaguar and Land Rover? Only Bill Ford at world HQ in Dearborn, USA, knows for sure. But I know this: the Eastern bloc has taken over from Britain as the number one location in Europe for big, ambitious companies to set up shop if they"re looking for a friendly pro-car welcome, low-tax Governments and capable, willing workers.



The D8 GT is based on...

The D8 GT is based on the back-to-basics D8 roadster, and uses Audi"s 1.8-litre turbo engine. But it"s faster, and boasts revised suspension settings, a more rigid chassis and uprated aerodynamics. A fully functional diffuser helps to create downforce at high speeds.

Ford"s Racing department soon realised the Puma would make a great rally car, and a 4x4 competition model was the result. A roadgoing version of the stage star - the Tickford-built Racing Puma - arrived in 1999, too, and proved one of the best driver"s machines ever, even though it was far more expensive than the basic variant. Each one of 500 limited-edition 152bhp models commanded a price of ÷£22,800.
