Designed to capture the passion of football and the excitement of racing, the Superleague Formula kicks off in August next year with a field of identical 750bhp V12-powered single-seaters, each bearing the colours of a famous football club.

Champions League regulars AC Milan, Olympiakos, Porto and PSV Eindhoven have already confirmed their participation, as have several top teams from South America.

“The original concept was missing two important things: a viable business plan and proper financing. These issues have been addressed,” said series founder Alex Andreu. “We are working with Havas – one of the world’s leading media buyers – to oversee our sales strategy, and the financing is far beyond anything that was invested before.” Andreu confirmed he’s in negotiation with several British clubs, but can’t reveal names yet. “Two places are reserved for UK teams, and we are talking to obvious candidates,” he added.
