Revealed for the first time today, this image gives the first clear view of the showroom ready hatchback. Set to go on sale in the UK in September, the big family car Czech will be available from around ÷£15,500.

The new model will aim to steal sales from Ford’s new Mondeo, and Skoda has high hopes for its new five-door and estate models. The firm expects UK sales to leap from 3,000 a year to 4,500.

Buyers after petrol power will be able to choose five VW-sourced units including an entry-level 120bhp 1.4-litre TSI super-turbo, a 158bhp 1.8 turbo, a 200bhp 2.0 turbo and a flagship 3.6-litre V6 complete with four-wheel drive. Diesel options will include 140bhp and 170bhp 2.0 common-rail turbos and a 2.7-litre V6 TDI.

The Superb will be unveiled in the metal at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
