That"s the claim made by online cover provider esure.com, after a study found that while 20 per cent of UK drivers have reported potholes to their local authority, a third of them say nothing has been done. One in 10 cars has been damaged by the ruts - five per cent have even failed an MoT as a result.

Called Around View Monitor...

Called Around View Monitor (AVM), the technology uses four cameras equipped with wide-angle lenses mounted around the car; one in the grille, one on each of the door mirrors and one on top of the back door. The clever "bird"s-eye" set-up enables drivers to navigate the tightest parking bays by merely watching the dashboard-mounted screen as they reverse. The process eliminates the need to swivel your head when manoeuvring.

Each side of the car is recreated on the screen to produce a two-dimensional, plan view of the vehicle as it backs into the bay - as if your car is being watched by a helicopter hovering overhead.

Technicians at Nissan expect to see the new technology fitted to new models within the next two or three years.
