Sources at Volvo have finally admitted the XC90 4x4 will be fitted with a V8 engine before the end of this year. Initially for the US market, the eight-cylinder powerplant should be offered in UK cars by early 2005. But there"s a debate over exactly which unit will be used. Two engines are available to the firm - a Yamaha-derived 3.5-litre or a variant of the 4.4-litre Jaguar-based V8 that has been developed for the new Land Rover Discovery.

Britain"s chances of...

Britain"s chances of hosting a grand prix beyond 2009 received a major boost last week. Circuit owner the British Racing Drivers’ Club voted overwhelmingly to support rescue plans to ensure the redevelopment of the event’s Silverstone venue.

Members of the BRDC needed to back the latest proposals before work to update facilities and safeguard the grand prix’s future could start.

“This vote is a great result for the future of British motorsport,” said club president and former F1 world champion Damon Hill. “The BRDC’s master plan is important for Silver÷stone, its hosting of the British Grand Prix and the development of motorsport in the UK. We can only continue to develop exciting young stars such as Lewis Hamilton if we have the facilities to nurture such talent. I know just how special it is to win a home grand prix – and we need that opportunity to be there for future generations of drivers.”

A commercial deal has yet to be struck with F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone for beyond the current contract, which expires in two years’ time. But now that the BRDC has rubber stamped the plans to deliver “a world-class venue of which UK fans can be truly proud”, this is sure to help the negotiations and hopefully secure the British Grand Prix’s position on the F1 calendar.
