It"s a record breaker! The new Honda Accord diesel has set a total of 19 new world records for speed. Among the figures achieved at the Papenburg oval test track in Germany was an average sustained speed of 130.38mph over a 24-hour period. The car also achieved average fuel economy of 92mpg when driven on a mixed road route. The two cars involved were selected at random off the production line by independent adjudicators.

Boffins added devices...

Boffins added devices to the dash of a car on a simulator so that "guinea pig" motorists could always see the speed limit for whichever road they were driving on. The equipment gave an audible warning whenever they went over that mark. According to the results, a constant reminder of the legal boundary encouraged drivers to stay within the law, whereas without it, they often exceeded the limit.

The Dutch-based scientists found two more safety benefits of the display, which could become a feature in future cars: drivers stayed further back from vehicles they were following - and they changed lanes less.
