Motorsport photographer McKlein has launched a set of calendars for 2008, ranging from a huge, metre-wide World Rally Championship offering, to a more modest 67cm example. This features global sports car racing, Formula One and rallying from the Fifties, Sixties and Seventies. Two desktop versions join the line-up – one for rally fans, the other titled Porsche Racing Legends.

THIS has to be the cheapest way to get behind the wheel of a Smart ForTwo! As part of a marketing campaign in its home country, the German firm has produced special glasses which let wearers ‘see’ what drivers of the small city car do.

And many told us they...

And many told us they were very impressed with the innovative new live action features and the content of the numerous stands. Car fan Mark Lewis, from Brighton, said: "I"ve been on the 4x4 course and to the Motropolis Live Action Arena. A lot of effort has gone into both, and it seems to be paying off." Debbie Watson of Solihull, W Mids, got behind the wheel of a Daihatsu Terios Sport at the Taster Test Drive. She explained: "I"m in the market for a new car so it"s a real bonus to have a go in one of the models I am considering."

Some manufacturers did come in for criticism, though. Chris Robinson from Coventry, Warks, was disappointed not to see any mainstream BMW and Mercedes cars on show, and asked: "Why wouldn"t they want to be part of this?" Meanwhile, at the BSM Driving School, where children as young as 14 can get behind the wheel, Robert Thompson from Birmingham was watching his 14-year-old grandson Daniel take to the tarmac for the very first time.

"I think this Driving School is a fantastic idea," he said. "What an opportunity for young would-be motorists!" A spokesman for the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, which is organising the exhibition, confirmed that early feedback was generally positive. "Things are looking good," he revealed. "We"ve had a very encouraging start."
