"These markings keep drivers on the correct path," Paul Watters explained. "Without them, you could be on the wrong part of the road, which is at best inconvenient and at worst dangerous."

A whole new dimension...

A whole new dimension of sat-nav technology is on the way with the development of hi-tech 3D screens!Ҡ

Drivers wont need special coloured specs to see the new three-dimensional images, though, as a leap in technology will create life-like imagery by vastly increasing the speed of computer chips required to control the screen.

Using LCD, it works by broadcasting two near identical images in rapid succession, creating the illusion of depth. Sat-nav firms TomTom, Garmin and Navman are reported to be investigating the technology, which could be paired with real images of street junctions and landmarks to make the job of picking your way through unfamiliar territory even easier.

According to Auto Express sources, the technology could be available as early as next year, with aftermarket firms seizing initial sales. Similar systems will then make it into upmarket cars as standard kit. For example, Land Rover and Range Rover models already boast 3D-ready dual image LCD screens as optional extras.
