Regional trials of the Internet payment system for owners of cars less than three years old have been so successful that it will be extended across the UK. Among the first to benefit will be drivers who move home - they"ll be able to enter new details via computer and avoid queueing at the post office.

A new EU directive could see drivers caught speeding on the Continent have the penalty points added to their licence, according to the AA Motoring Trust. Head of road safety Andrew Howard said: “Penalties currently stay in each country, but the new plan, which will start with the Irish border, will see points gained in another country put on to a driver’s record.”
