Choosing a green car isn’t easy – especially if you live in the North! A Government-backed survey reveals garages in Yorkshire and Humberside are least likely to highlight how polluting a model is. Research by the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership found only 40 per cent of these counties’ dealers display Department for Transport stickers listing mpg and emissions bands (right) on forecourt models. In top-performing Wales, it was nearly 80 per cent.

Special signs will tell motorists to treat it as an additional lane in heavy traffic. A Highways Agency spokesman said: "If the flow is congested, overhead signs will impose 50mph limits and open the hard shoulder."

The diesel variant, which covers 0-60mph in 10.6 seconds and returns 39.8mpg, gets a tailgate spoiler. Cabin revisions include better materials and instrumentation. Petrol models go on sale in November from í‚á£17,600, a slight increase over the existing car.
