A joint project with...

A joint project with Suzuki, the model seen here will be called the Sedici. This means 16 in Italian - literally referring to the multiple of four times four. It merges a compact body with a practical interior, plus the ability to tackle rough terrain, thanks to its all-wheel-drive set-up and raised ride height.

With flared arches, deep bumpers and black rubbing strips, the Sedici looks similar to the Suzuki SX4. And while both are virtually identical under the skin, each will get a unique dash and trim.

Engineered in Japan but built in Hungary, the Sedici offers a choice of 1.5 and 1.6-litre Suzuki petrol engines, or a 1.9 Fiat diesel. Most models feed power to all four tyres, but there will also be a cheaper two-wheel-drive variant for buyers who don"t plan to venture off-road.

The Sedici goes on sale here in the spring, after it"s been officially revealed for the first time at the Bologna Motor Show in Italy next month. Sports fans will then get to see the SUV close-up at February"s Winter Olympics in Turin, where Fiat is a major sponsor.

Meanwhile, Alfa Romeo will also have a busy stand at Bologna, with the firm tipped to be pulling the covers off its load-lugging 159 SW and Brera Spider.
